Ø For Awesome is a 3 way collaboration between Norway and New Zealand. Loosely based on a mix of 3 flagship beers: Stonecutter Scotch Ale, Hopwired IPA and Batch #100.
Words by the Brewerys
In November 2011, Kjetil Jikiun of Nøgne Ø fame paid us a visit at Renaissance and together we brewed our first international collaboration brew.
We had planned to brew a beer that was a three way split of Stonecutter Scotch Ale, HopWired and Batch #100. On the day, due to hop shortage and a batch of non-optimal yeast, it turned out more like a New Zealand version of Batch #100. The grist was identical to Batch #100, but using New Zealand grown ale malt: Pale, wheat and chocolate. Hops were 90% NZ: Pacific Jade, Motueka and Chinook, mixed with a pinch of American Columbus. Yeast: Wyeast 1272 American Ale II. The NZ hops are big and fruity while the Columbus brings a more savoury herbal hit. The malt profile can best be described as “fat”.
Special thanks to Dominic Kelly of Hashigo Zake, Nøgne Ø’s NZ importer, for bringing Kjetil to NZ and instigating this very special brew. What’s in the name? If you’re a kiwi you should know, but if you’re not you wouldn’t: Back in 1992, heavy weight champion David Tua made an infamous appearance on Wheel of Fortune. After spinning the wheel he requested an “O for awesome”. In his defence, he later claimed he was asking for an “O for Ohlson”. That still doesn’t make it a consonant though! This beer will be launched at Hashigo Zake on February 21st 2012. As the alert reader will notice this is also the eve of the anniversary of the big Christchurch earthquake and therefore we are donating the revenue of 2 kegs to the Red Cross. Christchurch is still shaking and the residents are still highly affected by it.
